Grieving the loss of a dog is unlike anything else. They are family and it hurts more than words can describe.
One powerful way to process your grief is to write them a letter.
It may seem silly, but it is not, it's sacred. It is something that will immortalize the feelings you have, and release them into the universe. It’s a connection to their spirit—and a balm for your heart.
💌 Why Write a Letter to Your Dog?
-
It gives you space to say what’s been left unsaid, specially if the passing was sudden
-
It lets you relive joyful memories. Maybe you'll shed a tear, but tears of joy can be beautiful.
-
It offers healing by honoring the bond you shared. The healing may take time, but it is a meaning way to heal.
✍️ How to Write It
There’s no “right” way—but here’s a guide to help:
1. Start with their name
“Dear (Your Dog's Name)…”
2. Say what you miss
“I miss the way you’d rest your head on my lap, and how your tail thumped when you heard your leash jingle, or the way you would greet me every day I came back home from work.”
3. Share favorite memories
“Remember the time you got the zoomies at the beach? You looked so free and happy”
4. Talk about the pain
“The house is quiet without you. Some days I still think I hear your paws and your barks...”
5. Tell them you love them
“You were the best thing that ever happened to me, and I will always miss you no matter how much time passes.”
6. Say goodbye—or see you later
“Until we meet again at the Rainbow Bridge best friend…”
📬 Where to Keep It
-
In a journal
-
In a keepsake box
-
Or submit it to missingmydog.com—your letter might help others too.
We will post it in our Remembrance blog in memory of all our furry friends that have crossed the rainbow bridge.
They may be gone, but your words keep them close.
